At Millbrook Community Preschool at Grace Church, we believe there are positive steps we can take to address racial bias and intolerance. At MCP, these steps take the forms of ensuring staff are educated and informed in ways that are supportive, equitable, and respectful of global, community, and family diversity including: race, nationality, religion, gender identity, physical ability, socioeconomic and immigration status, and family structure.
We understand that young children learn, in part, by imitating models, both real and symbolic. As such, we continue to welcome families to share their culture, histories, and traditions with staff and students. We commit to offering books, images, and toys that represent all people. We will strive to understand history, culture, and language so as to be a positive instrument for change rather than perpetuate stereotypes, misconceptions, and subjective histories.
This is a growing understanding and shifting perspective, and while our very core has always been love, care, and respect for the individual child, we recognize that our personal and collective histories, habits, and unexamined perspectives will require ongoing and renewed examination to make lasting change.
